This Thing Called Farming

Summer Squash SoupOn a hot summer day in July, I often wonder why I do this thing called farming. I know many of forefathers, including my own, had to farm for their meals. We, of course, can just go to the grocery store.
On those hot summer days when I am out in the gardens sweating out the last gallon of water I drank, I sometimes think of just giving it up. I think, why would anyone do this?
Then on a cold January day, I am standing in my pantry deciding which squash to cook up. I grab the giant zucchini, and decide to make a Summer Squash soup.
It is then, that it hits me that this is the reason that I farm. How many other people up here in the cold of New Hampshire can have farm fresh zucchini in January?
