Septo Mom
Left for a few days for a short vacation. Came home late Monday night.
Tuesday was going to be our planting day. We have to get our seeds in asap.
Well, Pyewacket had other plans. This was the day she decided to give birth. Oh, and it wasn’t going to be your normal birth either.
She went into labor around 10:30 a.m. Her water broke, and I got her all settled down into her basket. I did try and go outside and get some work done, but everytime I did, she would meow very loudly at the door for me. I figured she needed my support.
She started pushing a short time later, but was having some difficulty. I had read up on cat birthing to be ready, and knew that it shouldn’t go much over an hour. Around 11:30 I called the vet and told them what was happening. They said if she didn’t deliver within the next 20 minutes or so, we should bring her in for an exam to see what the problem might be. We called them back, told them we were on our way. With Pyewacket in her basket, we nestled her in for the hour car ride.
The vet brought her in right away and did an x-ray. From experience, they thought that the kittens were probably just big, and the first was stuck in the birth canal. To our suprise, when the x-ray came back, there were 6 kittens, and they were going to have to do a c-section. We had figured 2 or 3. We would have to return later to pick her up.
When we returned to the vet we were told that there was 7 kittens. One was hiding behind the other, and they hadn’t seen it on the x-ray.
That was only part of the story. Because she hadn’t given birth naturally, the hormone that stimulates mild production hadn’t kicked in. So, we were going to have to bottle feed every hour all night until it did. This was a totally new experience for the both of us. Not that I haven’t had my share of nightly baby feedings, but it was never a 3 ounce kitten.
Today, they are suckling from Mom, and are doing well. Pyewacket is now a proud mother of 7, and doing well. She seems to love the role.
The Fever Has Hit Me
I woke up this morning about 6:30. At first, I didn’t think it was going to be a good day. My head was swishy, and I felt kind of yucky. The norm for a person with vertigo. [Read more...]
April Showers Bring May Flowers
The showers may bring flowers, but it doesn’t help for getting much outdoor work done around here. It’s cold, and damp and no fun to do anything outdoors.
This morning I finished the chemise I had started a couple days ago. It turned out to be just what I wanted. It will be added to the Thornton Square line of clothes.
We are getting over two dozen eggs a day now. The chickens are out everyday, and having a ball. It is fun to watch them run all over the yard chasing things. Thank heavens the cats don’t chase them.
The cats do however chase every leave that blows across the yard. They are having fun, and we have fun watching them. I was sure they would be upset at us for making them outdoor cats, but I think their fun makes up for it. They have acres and acres to run and scamper after things that move. Puca, who we thought was going to be “wild” has tamed out well. Pyewacket is sweet, but now prefers to chase Puca over being in my lap. Oh, they grow so fast.
Saturday we are helping out at the library with the kids Easter Egg Hunt. We are donating the eggs for the kids to color. I have hard boiled some white eggs, green eggs, and brown eggs. It’ll be alot of fun.
First Healthy Vet Check
Pyewacket and Puca had their first vet check today. They got their shots, and she cleaned out their ears. I guess they had ear mites. Something not uncommon in small kittens. They usually get it from their mother. They also had flea dirt. Something mom passes on as well. I have a feeling that their mother wasn’t as well taken care of as she should have been. Sad. I do hope the other adopted kitten gets to get a vet check. Otherwise, that home will be infested with fleas in a short time.
It's a Boy
We picked up Puca (pronounced pooka) this morning. He is so cute, but not as friendly as his sister. When I picked him up at the store, he hissed, bit, and scratched at me. He ran off and hid behind the the stack of trellis’. Fiesty little fur ball he is. I got him settled into my jacket, and he calmed down. After a couple errands we came home and put him up with Pyewacket. It was as if she said, “hey I know you, you are my family”. they tucked away under the bed together and there they were for a good part of the day.
Meet Pyewacket
While in the big city of Conway today for Derek’s birthday, we went into the feed store to pick up some chicken food. I sat in the car. When Michael came back to the car he said, “they are giving away kittens in there.” Of course, I had to go see for my self.
The lady let me hold one, and I knew she was going to be perfect. She is a gray tiger, with white paws, and we were originally going to call her Mittens, but thought that was just too common. We remembered seeing the Jimmy Stewart movie Bell, Book & Candle. The cat in that movie was Pyewacket. Kim Novak’s character used Pyewacket to put spells on people. It was a great movie.
We decided that Pyewacket would need a friend. We knew that one her siblings would be the best fit. We called them back and she was willing to hold the last one. Great!
The only thing…I forgot to ask if it was a boy or a girl.
