In Memory of Effie

Our Beloved EffieToday was a sad day. Today was the day we had to let Effie go to Doggie Heaven.  She had gone blind last Christmas, and her eyes were growing so large, they were starting to be very painful. We know it was best for her, but it is still hard to say goodbye to our sweet little girl.

An Evening With The Moody Blues

It took me 30 years, but it was well worth the wait. Last night, Michael and I, Bob and Lauren, Derek and Tiera went to The Meadowbrook Pavillion in Gilford, NH to see The Moody Blues. It was a dream come true for me at last. My life is now complete.
The Moody Blues first full studio album, Days Of Future Passed, was released on 11 November 1967 and stayed on the Billboard Charts for over two years. I guess I remember them because of my brother Joe. Although I was very young, I grew up listening to them. He loved them, and passed his love for them down to me. I was in heaven the day he gave me his Days of Future Passed album. I still have it to this day. I couldn’t help thinking about him last night while I was there. I thought about how if I had gotten to see them with him, when I was 16, how different they would have looked. I’m sure the audience would have looked much different too.  The ages last night must have ranged in age from 15 to 65. It was awesome. It will certainly be a night that I will remember for a long, long time.

Walk on the Wild Side

staghorn_sumac_fruitEdible wild side that is. This afternoon, I did a Wild Edible Walk for Green Mountain Conservation Group’s Annual Summer Party.  The attendance was not what I expected, but I think everyone enjoyed themselves. We started out with a discussion about some of the wild edibles not found on site, and those out of season. One of my favorites is dandelion, and those of course aren’t out at this time of year. We then we walked around the grounds looking for teaberry, birch, maple, strawberry leaves, and raspberry leaves. It is also a pleasure for me to teach people the love of nature.

Rudy and Sully

Sully Just a Few Hours OldToday Karen and the kids were going to pick up Rudy. She had told me that if Sully was still here, that she was interested in him too.  Being that they were a gift for her girls, I wanted to put bows on them. But she showed up too soon.
So, Rudy and Sully are now in their new home. It is a small farm like ours, with goats, sheep and chickens. I know that they will get lots of love and attention.
Thanks Karen, Joe, and all the kids for giving the kittens a new home.

Shadow Goes Home

Today, Shadow went to her forever home. It was kind of sad to see her go, but I know that she will have loads of playmates. The family that took her has some cats at home that will be part of her new family.

Back to the Past

Kathy and Michael at Scribner's Mill, Harrison, Maine

Every year, the first weekend in August, Scribners Mill holds their Back to the Past events. Our friend had told us about it before, but this was our first year that we attended. Although we wear our Victorian clothes around the house and Effinhgam, give us and opportunity to wear them out somewhere, and we are usually there.
For just $6 each, we got to roam around what use to be an active mill up until 1962. From 1851 through 1962, three generations of Scribners owned and operated the mill and two additional generations worked in the mill. You can read more of history of the mill be visiting http://www.scribnersmill.org/history.shtm.
Scribner’s Mill’s vision is “to be an accurately reconstructed saw mill, powered by water using early technology to produce wood products.” We feel that this is an important part of mill history, and we wanted to support them any way we could.
They had saw mill demonstrations, exhibitors from all over, blacksmith demos, tours, craftsmen at work, antique fire truck from 1927 , candle dipping, all sorts of childrens’ events, a pig roast on Saturday  and baked bean ‘suppah’ (darn we missed this) and much more.
Back to the past we went, and had a great time.
