The Piglets Have Been Ordered

I called the Remick Farm Musuem today and ordered our two piglets. We are going over next Monday to pay the deposit and actually get to see them. We’ll be able to pick them up in about a month. Oh, the exitement.
We had decided that the animals that would be for food would not be named. This would make it easier when the time came for killing them. Somehow I can’t resist naming the piglets. I am not sure which sex we are getting, so I guess I will have to wait until we talk to the farm manager of Remick on Monday.

Dandelion Season at Cloverleaf Farm

While most people hate the dreaded dandelion, we seek them out. We love when they grow in our lawn, because this means a treat of dandelion mushrooms for supper. We have also made dandelion wine, dandelion syrup, dandelion jelly, and of course dandelion greens. I even use it as a hair rinse to lighten my hair.
Here are some of our favorite recipes for using dandelions.

Dandelion “Mushrooms”

dandelion flowers rinsed in water but still slightly moist

Dash salt (optional)

Dash garlic powder (optional)

Dash Parmesan cheese
¼ cup flour
¼ cup cornmeal
¼ cup extra virgin olive oil (You may need more as frying goes along)

Dredge moist flowers in flour and cornmeal mix.

Heat olive oil in a heavy frying pan.

Add flowers and fry quickly, turning to brown all sides. Serve hot.

Add low fat butter to taste

Close your eyes and pop one of these crisp goodies into your mouth. Would you believe it was a dandelion and not a fried mushroom?

Dandelion Jelly
1 qt. dandelion flowers
1 qt. water
1 tsp. lemon juice
1 box Sure-Jell

Cook together for 3 minutes the flowers and water.

Strain and save juice.

Follow directions on Sure-Jell box using dandelion water.

Bring to a boil, then add 4 1/2 cups sugar and lemon juice.

Boil until gelled.

Pour into sterilzed jars.

Will last for about 1 year.

Investigation Continues

The investigation into the murder of Stacey Burns in Wolfeboro continues. According to NECN.com it is a mystery.
“Police say there were six people in the home where a woman’s body was found on Sunday, but no one has been named a suspect. They plan on bringing special forensic team to comb the grounds and the house and look for any evidence. ”
How does this help the people living in the community of Wolfeboro to know they are safe?

Sue the Sow Has Given Birth

…so this means piglets for us.
We have been looking for a couple of month for Tamworth Piglets. Tamworth is a heritage breed of pig. No one around here had them. The only ones we could find were over two hours away. That was to far for us to travel with piglets in our van.
About a month ago, we called the Remick Museum in Tamworth, NH. Someone told us they had piglets for sale. We were added to the waiting list for Sue the Sow.  We were close to the bottom of the list, and it didn’t seem like we would be getting piglets this year.
We just got the call from Remick Museum that Sue has given birth to 8 piglets, and everyone on the waiting list have gotten their pigs. So our name was next on the list.
We are so excited. We will get the pigs the week of June 3. We can go visit them before they are ready to come home.
If you click on the Remick Museum link, scroll down just a bit. You’ll see the pictures of the piglets in the block of baby pictures.

Murder in Wolfeboro

A single mother of 5, Stacey Burns was murdered in her home in Wolfeboro. A 911 call came in around 11 a.m., and by the time police arrived at the home, Stacey was found already dead. There were 6 people home when it happened. The police are investigating, but not releasing much of what has really happened. It was the first murder in Wolfeboro in 30 years.
Wolfeboro is about a half hour from us. It is rather unsettling that something like this could happen around here. Living in small town America, we think we are all safe.  It is times like this I have to wonder.

Crafty Kids

Tomorrow starts the new series for kids at the Effingham Library called Crafty Kids. It will run the second Saturday of every month, and few extra times during the summer reading program.
Being Mother’s Day on Sunday, we are dedicating the first Craft Kids project to making something for Mom. The kids will get to make picture frames, decorate them, and then we will take their picture and put it in there for them to take home to Mom. They can also choose to make jewelry out of dyed macaroni. They will also get to create their very own card.
It will be fun for the kids, and of course fun for us.

On The Subject of Eggs

Since I seem to be on a roll about eggs, I figured I might as well continue.
We collect eggs every day. Eggs are of course the perfect food. They are loaded with all sorts of vitamins, and is a good source protein. According to calorieking.com, eggs have 54 calories, 1.1 mg of fat, 157 mgs of cholesterol,  is a good source of potassium. If you eat just the whites, you knock out the cholesterol, lower the calories to 17, and you get 3.6 grms protein instead of 7 grms.  [Read more...]

If Brown Eggs Are Local Eggs….

…and local eggs are fresh, then what is it when it is two toned.

I just came in from collecting today’s eggs. We collect eggs every day. Not too much news in that.  But, what you see in the picture is an egg that is white and brown. Haven’t seen one of them before. We get green eggs, white eggs, and brown eggs, but we have never gotten a two toned egg before.
Maybe I could sell it on Ebay…

That Must Have Hurt

In the picture you see two different eggs. The one on the left is your normal size white egg. The one on the right is one we got yesterday morning. “Wow, that must have hurt,” was all I could think when I picked it up out of the nesting box. There was one chicken walking away with a limp.

The Future of Food

I just watched this documentary on hulu.com, and couldn’t believe what I was hearing.
For those of you interested in the future of your food, as you should be, I would highly suggest wathcing this fantastic documentary about the Future of Food
It gives the definition of what genetically modified (GM) foods are, and the cause and effects of this in humans. It was fascinating to learn that our governement is truly screwed up, and has way to much power.
If we are what we eat, then we are screwed.
