The Best Yogurt On The Planet
The best yogurt on the planet is homemade. It is very simple to do. And it saves so much money. You can also make yogurt cheese.
All you need is:
1 quart milk- lowfat to regular. You can also use non-fat powdered milk. This is what I use. You can have it on hand, and it doesn’t go bad.
1/2 cup plain yogurt-make sure it has live active cultures in it.
1/2 cup non-fat powdered milk-this thickens it.
Heat milk to 180 degrees
Cool to 110 degrees.
Pour in sterilized jars.
Now the tricky part-You must keep the culture between 100 – 110 degrees for the next 6 hours. Any lower the bacteria won’t do it’s job, and above 110 it will kill the bacteria.
You can keep it warm several ways. Oven (pilot light), crock pot(in a bath of warm water), or a?cooler. I have used both the crock pot method and the cooler method. [Read more...]
Getting Thornton Up and Running
I have been working on getting Thornton Square up and running. I have several different outfits, and designs all made, and I have been working on a couple others. Now, I just need to get the pictures taken, descriptions put together and then get them on the site. This is something I have been working on all winter and I am anxoius to get it done before spring planting comes along. That will take up most of my time until fall.
Sunshine, Warm Day, and a 12 Pound Chicken
Today is a beautiful, warm, sunny day. It feels good after a long cold winter.
We decided that today was the day to process the well overdue chickens in our barn. They should have been done by mid-February, but the weather has been too cold.
So, out came the cone of silence (otherwise known as a killing cone), all our utensils, and a chicken. The first one we cut up into packages to freeze such as breast, leg, thigh etc. The second one we decided would be frozen whole. This bird was huge. Unbelievably huge. I just had to weigh it. Our kitchen scale was too small. I had to use the regular human weigh in scale.
Wow….12 pounds. When is the last time you saw a 12 pound chicken in any grocery store. You never will either. They don’t let them get that big.
Twelve pounds of free range organic chicken.
Yum
Thing 1
Today, we did a program at the Effingham Public Library to celebrate the 105th birthday of Dr. Seuss.
It was so much fun. We had 14 kids participate in decorating party hats, green eggs, and then we had an interactive reading of Green Eggs and Ham. Each kid got to participate by holding up the part of the story as it was read. They had so much fun. And so did?we. We can’t wait to do it again next year.
Happy Birthday Dr. Seuss
Today is the 105th birthday of favorite children’s author Dr. Seuss.
My favorite Dr. Seuss book is Green Eggs and Ham. The Cat In The Hat is close behind.
I read Green Eggs and Ham?to my sons over and over as they were growing up. As well, we had it on video tape as a cartoon. They not only loved it, I did too.
On Saturday, we are celebrating Dr. Seuss Birthday with a big birthday bash at the Effingham Public library. The children are encouraged to come as their favorite Dr. Seuss character. We of course will be dressed up as well.
After the candles have been blown out and the cupcakes are eaten, we will do an interactive reading of Green Eggs and Ham. The kids are going to love it. They will get to meet Penelope the Wonder Chicken, who actually lays green eggs. They will get to decorate the green eggs, and take them home.
Oh, I can’t wait for that day, when I can read and eat and play!
