Here Chick, Chick, Chick…

This weekend was one of the last one where we can actually get away before the season starts, so we decided to visit the parents up in Maine. On the way home from visiting up in Maine, we stopped at Shop N Save in Cornish to buy some food staples we were getting low on. As we were coming out, we heard a rooster from the feed store next door. We figured, we would go in ask about chickens. We have been wanting to get some now for a year. We wound up walking out with 3 new baby chicks in a box, and all the trimmings; heat lamp, watering trough, and chicken starter feed. Of course, all 4 dogs were with us in the car, and were quite interested in the box that I had on my lap. The box was making funny peeping noises. I am not sure what they would do to them, or with them, buy the chicks??are now resting comfy in our back room.

Gearing Up for Summer

The green house is coming alive. There are pots everywhere. Some seedlings have started to emerge, while others haven’t. We are going to have so much more to plant this season than we did the last. We have friends that will share in the planting, and then we will share in the harvest for their hard work. Such a??great trade. We will have new produce too, like Full Moon Pumpkins (they are white), giant pumpkins, and lots of other out of the ordinary produce. We will also have more heirloom varities as well.

Blast From the Past

For those of you who know me, you know I have been on a journey to get fit and healthy again. To date, I have lost 33 pounds, and over 10 inches throughout my body. I feel so much better.

The picture here is taken about 1989. It was when I was at my smallest, although I don’t remember what I actually weighed. I just remember the dress was a size 7. I still have the dress, and tried it on earlier. I was stunned??when it actually went??on. Another inch, and it would have fit perfect. Something to look forward to. I am so excited, I could scream…okay I think I will….there, I feel better.

The Earth is Full of Wonders

Here it is mid April. The snow is still a few inches thick on the vegetable garden. Ah, but low and behold, below the earth are fresh, sweet, and juicy carrots. While I was out raking today, I decided to check to see if I could find the carrots that were left in the garden last fall. We had checked before, but with no luck. Today, I turned over a chunck of snow, and there they were, gleaming up at me. The beautiful orange tops sticking out of the mud and snow.??They had survived the brutal winter and pounds of snow. The tops were still green. It was awe inspiring.
Tonight, we will have fresh carrots with our supper. Ah, isn’t spring wonderful

Still Waters Run Deep

Just a few days ago we checked the basements for water. There was none. Now, just a few days later our pumps are hard at work sucking the water to the outside world. Luckily, we don’t have as much water coming in as last year. When we had the pantry / shop insulated last spring, the man went down to insulate the floor, and found 4 feet of standing water.?? Your Ground is Showing

Finally. Out in our yard there is actually spots of ground showing up. It is so exciting. Still can’t get in the greenhouse though. Since the green house is still not accesible, we will have to start our seeds in the house. Not quite the same warmth as a green house, but it will have to do until we can clear the door of it’s corn snow.
It is so exhuberating to know that we will again see the ground soon.

Out With the Old

No, this is not an April Fool’s Day joke. I have been wanting to start on redoing our kitchen since we moved into the house in November of 2006. For some reason, I felt today was the day to begin. [Read more...]
